Last day of 'Copenhell' started out rather special and grand for me. I like the fact that the festival is bringing in different things to the bill even if a whole Symphony Orchestra perhaps wasn't the thing going down the best with the crowd. Jacob Stegelmann brought the AARHUS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA to the festival which felt quite odd (and keeping in mind that the Sweden Rock Symphony Orchestra thing didn't shoot to the stars...)

Still I think it was a very cool thing. I'm not really in to the kind of super-hero movies so only a few pieces of music was familiar to me, like Grieg's “Hall of the Mountain King”, “Super Mario” (even if I played Giana Sisters more than Mario), the Tom & Jerry: Kitty Foiled” one as well as “20th Century Fox Theme”. It's a quite odd move with all this, even for an Orchestra in a standard environment. But I guess that's also why it worked out, it's just odd enough of an event and the right themes to appeal to the 'Copenhell' crowd. I mean, it even brought on a wall of death during the “Super Mario” theme.

JACOB STEGELMANN & ORKESTER Aarhus Symfoniorkester setlist:

01. “Also Sprach Zarathustra”
02. “Batman Medley”
03. “The Dark Knight”
04. “Superman The Movie”
05. “Spider-Man”
06. “Heroes (Avengers)”
07. “Hall Of The Mountain King”
08. “Raiders Of The Lost Ark”
09. “Super Mario Medley”
10. “Angry Birds”
11. “Merrie Melodies”
12. “Tom & Jerry: Kitty Foiled”
13. “20th Century Fox Theme”
14. “Star Wars”
15. “The Imperial March”
16. “Gremlins Rag”
17. “Star Wars”

It was actually DEFECTO that was the first ones on the agenda. I saw them some years ago when they opened in the Pandaemoneum stage and they sure have grown since. Their modern mix of Groove, Heavy and a touch of METALLICA worked fine. DEFECTO have created a quite unique sound these last few years. Much can be signed to Nicklas Sonne's vocal ability here. He has a fantastic tone but easily mix it with some harsh lines. The flow in the music is fantastic, great energy which really made me wake up. It's always a little slow to start for the third day but DEFECTO sure helped.

Opening “Nemesis” sounds fantastic and the chorus stands out. I really like it when the pace is taken down somewhat in the chorus and the smooth-flowing melody gives that impression. Also the visual aspect has improved a lot; the intensity and confidence in the whole thing are phenomenal. And a simple thing as some raisers to stand on in the front makes it look massive. Also the energy from the band contributed to the whole experience of course. Truly professional performance and really amusing to watch.

Another track that stood out was “Ablaze”, a more dynamic piece of music. Topped with great vocal lines. I keep saying it, there are a lot of interesting things coming in the Danish scene nowadays and DEFECTO sure is one more on that list.

Then I had a debate with myself whether I should see STEEL PANTHER or not. This because I think the clowny gimmick gives a morose delectation. I've never really been a fan of people trying to make a name by making a joke of the things I love and it's rather sad that STEEL PANTHER draw full houses while other hard-working band get gigs cancelled because a poor presale.

But I have to give STEEL PATHER a lot of kudos for their whole performance. It is silly yes, but to pull that show off and keep that level of professionalism throughout it all takes a lot of effort. I got my preconceptions shattered once more and I certainly don't mind to admit I was wrong when it is towards the positive side. And even if the topics of the songs are silly, “Gloryhole” and “Girl From Oklahoma” stood out the most. Some due to the introductions, some due to the music. And it is actually quite funny when Satchel constantly get distracted and claim he bought drugs instead of performing the tasks he was meant to do.

Still, the very good songs and the performance by the band left nothing to complain about. It's over the top but on occasion bands could pick up some of this which would improve the show. So STEEL PANTHER sure was a pleasant surprised even if I not fully understand how they have gotten as big as they are.

STEEL PANTHER Setlist:

01. “Eyes Of A Panther”
02. “Goin' In The Backdoor”
03. “Asian Hooker”
04. “Just Like Tiger Woods”
05. “Poontang Boomerang”
06. “Gloryhole”
07. “Girl From Oklahoma”
08.  “Community Property”
09. “Death To All But Metal”

Then it was time to head over to the Pandaemonium stage and watch SUFFOCATION. For good and bad, some bands play one more than one festival during the summer so I managed to see SUFFOCATION at 'Sweden Rock Festival' also. They did great there but the sound was quite muddy so it was definitely worth checking them out again. One of the things I like in Denmark is that there's not the same decibel restriction as it is in Sweden. It sure did SUFFOCATION justice as with the more distinct sound at 'Copenhell' the intensity came through. Also the fines in the music, how damn tight it was.

I don't listen to a whole lot of brutal music these days but the old-school bands, that I got to know back in the days still appeal to me. Hence it was great to see SUFFOCATION as they were one of those I found there in the early 90's. Vocalist Ricky Myers is of course new to the fold compared to that. But I really liked his attitude on stage, the amount of coldness in his appearance combined with some headbanging did the trick.

It was said that W.A.S.P. wouldn't allow any photographers either. But as a pleasant surprise it was just to walk in to the pit. The massive stage and Blackie standing a bit back on it didn't really make it easy to get good shots though. But anything is better than a closed pit, and since both Mike Duda and Doug Blair are fair-faced and gladly posed at the edge of the stage, attention was put on them instead. There's been debate about W.A.S.P. over the years, how much is live and not. Parts definitely are and frankly, all those layers have been a part of the W.A.S.P. sound for many, many years so why shouldn't they use them live?

This was bound to be a good party as it was announced to be a best of set. As much as I love “The Crimson Idol”, it is one of my all-time favorite albums, I don't think that concept is right for a festival afternoon gig. Then it's better like this, “On Your Knees” followed by “Inside The Electric Circus” to open the show. Followed by THE WHO's “The Real Me” and “L.O.V.E. Machine”. The singing by the crowd was massive for those songs. Which also can be said about “The Crimson Idol” songs. I really like both “The Idol” and “Arena Of Pleasure”. But both “Heaven's Hung In Black”, which of course isn't from that album but still very good, and “Chainsaw Charlie (Murders in the New Morgue)” struck harder. So for me this was a very good feature in the afternoon, it gave the energy-boost needed at that point of time.

W.A.S.P. setlist:

01. “On Your Knees”
02. “Inside The Electric Circus”
03. “The Real Me” (THE WHO cover)
04. “L.O.V.E. Machine”
05. “The Idol”
06. “Arena Of Pleasure”
07. “Heaven's Hung In Black”
08. “Chainsaw Charlie (Murders in the New Morgue)”
09. “Wild Child”
10. “I Wanna Be Somebody
