It's always very nice to get to a new place to see a show. Apollon - Folkets Hus Kulturhuset is a new venue to me and to hang out with the not so, for classic Hard Rock, spoilt Trollhättan audience for this line-up sure was a treat. The show was sold out months in advance so there was no second-guessing that it was to be a good night. The only downside with the night was the sparse selection of beer in the bar. Which maybe was good since three bands is a long night and with such good music served it's easy beers go down too quick.

And RAVEN opened up in their fantastic way. It was fun to listen to the comments from the crowd just prior to the show like: “I used to listen to them back in the 80's but I've never seen them live..”. All I could think was that soon they won't know what hit them. I'm amazed each and every time I see RAVEN, their energy on stage is just phenomenal. And that they've managed to keep that up, even after a set of dates as was lined up for them here is just outstanding. It of course sound good too, “Destroy all Monsters” from latest release “ExtermiNation” just gets better and better in every show. But as expected, it was the older material that got the biggest response. “Hell Patrol” is another great one but it took until “All For One” before the crowd woke up for real. Fair enough, since it's impossible not to follow bassist/vocalist John Gallagher when he demands response. It's also a very shout-a-long friendly track which sure boosted the crowd. I still prefer furious “Hung, Drawn & Quartered” though, the speedy tune is a real smack in the face and I found myself smiling from ear to ear. The downside with RAVEN on the opening slot was that the show felt very short. The crowd had just gotten warmed up when they said "thank you, goodnight and see you at the merch-booth" and wrapped the show up with “On And On”.

As RAVEN have been touring quite frequently lately this show wasn't any surprise, it was what I expected. But that's not a bad thing when it comes to RAVEN, the opposite. It was intense and they sure sound good these days.

RAVEN setlist:

01. “Destroy All Monsters”
02. “Hell Patrol”
03. “All for One”
04. “Hung, Drawn & Quartered”
05. “Top Of The Mountain”
06. “On Aand On”

It's clear that I've changed my taste in music lately and accept much softer Rock and A.O.R nowadays compared to what I did. I still couldn't get my head around FM fully, what they did on this bill as well as their music. I did give them a try back in the days but nothing really got stuck. I also did my homework and gave it a few more tries prior to this show and by all means, it surely sounded good. But when FM hit the stage my jaw really dropped. RAVEN had a really good sound and with their frenzy energy I thought this would be rather mellow. The sound was still very good but now it was completely different, another type of dynamics and air to it. It took just half of set-opener “Black Magic” to have me hooked. What a fantastic performer and vocalist Steve Overland is. He's captivating which made it really hard to look away. When music is performed as flawless as this was it gets another life compared to the records. “I Belong To The Night” which was second track out is a very good example of this. On the other hand, everything sounded very good, even “Bad Luck” from “Tough It Out”, which was the record I gave a try when the 80's shifted to the 90's.

I think FM did a great choice when picking the setlist as it gave a great overview over the bands career as well as proving they still got it. One of my absolute favorites from the show was sing-along friendly “Killed By Love”, a catchy track with great dynamics and variation from the bands most recent album “Atomic Generation”.

I really love it when things like this happens, that one performance change my perception and opinion on a band completely. Afterwards records came across in a completely different way also and I couldn't for my life understand why it didn't hit me prior to the show. So yes, they sure was the surprise of the night and a fabulous performance by FM it was.

FM setlist:

01. “Black Magic”
02. “I Belong To The Night”
03. “Bad Luck”
04. “That Girl”
05. “All Or Nothing”
06. “Tough It Out”
07. “Killed By Love”
08. “Wildside”
09. “Burning My Heart Down”

Just as RAVEN I've seen SAXON countless times but it's always a great experience and they always put something different in the set. There is almost always some surprise baked in to the massive pile of songs on the list. And it was with the same excitement as always I took on this show, a little more actually since the spirit was very high within the venue. It normally is better when bands of SAXON's size hit the stage in smaller towns and it becomes quite charming when the next guy is telling his friend stories from the 80's about Biff Bifford (nope, all Swedes are not all that skilled in English). Since that guy pretty much represented the crowd this night it was of course the classics that got the best response. But damn, those newer tracks sound good, opening “Thunderbolt” and maybe even more so the brutal “Sacrifice”. SAXON also have that furious energy and they all seemed to have a very good time up on stage.

But yes, it took until “Motorcycle Man” or even “Strong Arm Of The Law” before the crowd got started but then it was full on from there to the end. I think it was smart to squeeze in a few new ones in the second half of the set as well. The effect of “They Played Rock And Roll” after mellow “Dallas 1 PM” worked perfectly. That song is of course special but it worked equally well with “Sons Of Odin” after “And The Bands Played On” and “747 (Strangers In The Night)”.

What surprised me the most with this SAXON show was that “Eagle Has Landed” as the first of the encores. It's a fantastic track and always gives me goose-bumps but it's not a standard feature in the set. But that too worked and the ending with “Heavy Metal Thunder”, “Wheels Of Steel” and “Denim And Leather” boosted the crowd who didn't really feel done when SAXON called it a night. Satisfied is another thing, no one can complain about a set like that but people still wanted more. Everyone sure got their money's worth this night though. Truly high musical standard and a nice event made it a great night.

SAXON setlist:

01. “Olympus Rising”
02. “Thunderbolt”
03. “Sacrifice”
04. “Nosferatu (The Vampires Waltz)”
05. “Motorcycle Man”
