Sometimes it feels like the combination of bands aren't the best for these events. But by all means, having SHADOWSPAWN warming up the place before WITCH CROSS worked. The place got hot and SHADOWSPAWN were intense and very loud. But I think they had some issues with the sound as it appeared they missed out on some changes here and there which made the music more chaotic than it really was.

I really liked Bue Torin Jensen’s extremely brutal vocals and expression though. The way he stared at the people in the front was kind of scary. Musically it got better towards the end also and “Helltaker”, the single from sole full length album “Hope Lies Dormant” sounded good.  That also “Savage” while it felt they all got tired for the last song out “Endless Suffering”. I don't know, I'm not that into Death Metal anymore but I enjoyed parts of SHADOWSPAWN's set. They still have a bit to go before they hit the big leagues though.

SHADOWSPAWN setlist:

01. “Spawn of Darkness”
02. “Mind Shut Down”
03. “Life Is They Way You Die”
04. “Hope Lies Dormant”
05. “Grey In Design”
06. “Templar of Temptation”
07. “Helltaker”
08. “Savage”
09. “Endless Suffering”

If there was a problem with the sound for WITCH CROSS as well that was nothing they showed at least. It all sounded as good as it always has and it sure is great to see them play. The crowd was super-thrilled also and High Voltage was close to packed out when WITCH CROSS kicked off their set.

As usual they started with “Night Flight To Tokyo”, a great song and it worked to boost the already charged crowd as well. It's their hit and most people knew it really well. In a way it feels odd that they start with this one instead if keeping it to the end. But it also hooks people in so I guess anything goes. “Ride With The Wind” and “No Angel” went down well too. But Kevin Moore impressed for real in “Face Of A Clown”. His expression is phenomenal and even if he had to work hard for this song it came out great, close to perfect. Everything sounded really good actually. Two more favorites from the set were “Bird Of Prey” and “Metal Nation”, two catchy tunes that works really well live.

But I don't really understand why JUDAS PRIEST's “Breaking The Law” was added to the set. Especially since WITCH CROSS have incorporated Kevin's previous employer, OLIVER/DAWSON SAXON in the set with a few olds-school SAXON tunes. They sure should have enough originals to cover a full headline set. And if still insisting on playing a classic track like that, learn the lyrics! That track in particular felt sloppy in comparison to the rest. Luckily WITCH CROSS picked it up again with “Are You There” and new “Phoenix Fire”. So it ended all good and the encores sounded as fantastic as the rest. “Strong Arm Of The Law” is of course very suitable for a live show as that too is something most everyone knows. Absolute last came “Demon On The Mirror”, one of my favorites from WITCH CROSS's second album “Axe To Grind” and ended the night in a very good way. It was just the mess-up with the JUDAS PRIEST song that took things down a notch, else WITCH CROSS showed the same high standards as always.
