The last day of ‘Copenhell’ was no exception from the rest and started in a very nice way. I had actually done my homework for some parts at least and had checked out RISING prior to the festival. I think there are a lot of very cool and interesting things going on in the Danish scene and I didn't want to miss out on something I potentially could enjoy very much. And I was right, RISING appealed to me. I love the combination of an extremely Heavy sound while there are tempo in the music still. RISING is listed as Stoner and yes, they partly are. The general feel in their music is definitely Stoner oriented. But there are also elements of Epic Doom in there. And that's the main reason why I like it.

The show turned out as expected. RISING delivered brute force and it sounded amazing. Like a rolling thunder really, extreme punch. The backdrop with the (black) moon, cover from “Oceans Into Their Graves” worked perfect to create depth and a cool atmosphere. So in general it was yet another fantastic start of a nice Festival day. RISING could perhaps have worked a little harder to fill out the massive Hades stage but it's a petty thing just. Else it was awesome.

More Danish Metal to come then. I was surprised to see HATESPHERE listed for the Helveti stage. And I was even more surprised by the massive crowd waiting for them to start. I think this is a significant difference between Sweden and Denmark. The Danes seems to be very proud of their own successes. While there's an undertone of envy in Sweden and no band that hits it big is worth listening to if you're a true metalhead and no Poser.

And damn, it was a full on hit from the first note. I love the energy and the drive in the music. The mix of precise riffing and groove work perfect for a live situation which made “New Hell”, latest release from HATESPHERE with the same title, a perfect opening. It was also great watching Peter “Pepe” Lyse Hansen fiddling away on his guitar. It all looked very easy and effortless and he was going crazy on stage while doing it. Another favorite was lead-heavy “Resurrect with a Vengeance” with its fateful riffs and dark vocals. The old-school thrasher “Murderlust” also went down really well.

The thing is, no matter how dark and brutal HATESPHERE's music was it was still a very cheerful moment. It was a lot of fun and it didn't take long to see that they really could handle a stage as Helveti. What a start of the last day!

HATESPHERE setlist:

01. “New Hell”
02. “Reaper Of Life”
03. “Resurrect With A Vengeance”
04. “Your Sad Existence”
05. “Vermin”
06. “The Fallen Shall Rise In A River Of Blood”
07. “Murderlust”
08. “Lines Crossed Lives Lost”
09. “Forever War”
10. “Iconoclast”
11. “Disbeliever”
12. “Sickness Within”

I was going to see LOST SOCIETY on the Pandaemonium stage since Folk Metal isn't really my thing but glancing over at the Hades stage and there was a complete forest build I decided to stay and watch HULDRE instead.

It's actually pretty cool when a band goes on fully for the package no matter what style of music it is. The character of the band members was really fascinating. Vocalist Nanna Barslev took on the stage with true conviction, her expressions were fantastic. And behind her stood Laura Emilie Beck with her violin like a wood nymph. She looked very innocent and neat at first but when the music started going that changed. Her black dress started moving and the orange fabric under the black skirt came to life and when she spun it looked like fire almost. Add a massive head-spin with her long flowing hair to that as well and her mellow initial appearance was gone completely.

Also really impressive with HULDRE was that they got everything together. Apart from the ordinary rock line-up there was Troels Dueholm Nørgaard who swapped between flutes and Hurdy Gurdy. Kudos to the sound-guy needs to be handed out also since it all sounded perfect.

It all was really impressive so I'm happy I stayed. I mean, no matter how much I like Finish Speed Metal, I've seen LOST SOCIETY before and I'm sure I will get to see them again. And seeing HULDRE was another notice to myself to not judge without knowing. Even if a band not play my favorite style I sure can appreciate a good show anyway.

I was really curious to see how EUROPE would be received in Denmark. That they twitch the nostalgia nerve in Sweden is clear as the shows they've done playing “The Final Countdown” have been very popular (as well as very good too). I wasn't as sure that it would be really the same intensity here. And it wasn't neither from the crowd nor from the band. EUROPE actually felt rather tired this day. Everything they do sound very good. Joey Tempest is a fantastic singer and he sounds better these days than he ever have. “Rock The Night” is a good sample of that one. It also featured a snippet of the BLACK SABBATH classic “Heaven And Hell” where Joey let the whaling's take over. It all sounded fantastic. It wasn’t really the same punch and nerve as I’ve gotten used to when it comes to EUROPE. So I was expecting more. “Scream Of Anger” as well as “Last Look At Eden” are fabulous songs. EUROPE have gained popularity again in Sweden and lately which also have brought attention to the bands newer records. Here people were watching politely but not much more. Not even “Ready Or Not” got the crowd to wake up. That song is one of my favorites and I always appreciate to hear it live. It had to be “Superstitious” and “The Final Countdown” to get some response out of the crowd and with those two songs it got massive instead.

So even if this was a good gig by EUROPE it was far from the best I've seen.

EUROPE setlist:

01. “War Of Kings”
02. “Hole In My Pocket”
03. “Rock The Night”
04. “Scream Of Anger”
05. “Last Look At Eden”
06. “Firebox”
07. “Sign Of The Times”
08. “Ready Or Not”
09. “Nothin' To Ya”
10. “The Beast”
11. “Superstitious”
12. “The Final Countdown”
