Sweden Rock XXV Day 1 @ Sölvesborg (SE) - Page 2

Since I had nothing better to do, I decided to check out AMARANTHE. The songs I've heard had not really appealed to me but it can be a completely different experience when it is live. One thing is for sure; I've completely missed how big they've become, so seeing the crowd waiting and see the front lines completely packed with kids, their parents and a whole lot of others, came as a real surprise.

And from a show perspective, it was really crazy - pyro's, effects and fire made the show really cool to watch. But musically AMARANTHE remained the same, I missed some guitars and some punch in the music. But what do I know, must have been for “Trinity” or “Hunger” where the crowd went absolutely crazy, almost BEATLES hysteria. It was fascinating to see it all but no, AMARANTHE is not for me.

AMARANTHE setlist:

And then came one of the worst clashes of the festival; on the 4 Sound Stage GRAHAM BONNET kicked off his fantastic set while TRIBULATION took over the Rockklassiker Tent Stage. Two very different artists for sure and I love them both and I had never seen either of them before the 'Sweden Rock Festival'. But since I had more chances to see TRIBULATION there was no doubt really where to go.

It's of course very smart to play a set of classics, especially at that time of night and what made it even more fun was that I don't think I've heard any of the songs live before. Definitely not the set opener “Eyes Of The World” and I doubt RAINBOW played “All Night Long” with Doogie White in the mid 90's. And then to get to hear “God Blessed Video” and perhaps even more “Will You Be Home Tonight” from ALCATRAZZ I didn't know what to do with myself anymore. Or the IMPELLITTERI “Stand In Line”. It would have been tough reading this setlist afterwards if I'd chosen to go to and see TRIBULATION instead. But, no matter what, and how damn cool the set was I wouldn't have mind having a few solo songs in here too.

Graham's voice sound fantastic still, ok, he had to work for the highest notes and slide up to the absolute most high-pitched ones but in general he sounded amazing. And he too had that joy on stage that spread throughout the crowd making everybody stick around until the end of the set. I was hoping for some MSG songs also, but you never know since there was to be a Michael Schenker set later on, but towards the end of the main set they came, “Desert Song”, “Dancer” and “Assault Attack”, the fun thing that I got to hear these songs twice on one festival as they were featured in the Michael Schenker set too.

Most people had been waiting for “Since You Been Gone”, that was clear from the first note. It sure is a good song but the MSG material struck harder. And I think “Lost In Hollywood” is even cooler to be frank. It felt like the set was over in no time, it was fun and sounded amazing so it was definitely the right choice I made to see Graham Bonnet this first festival night.

GRAHAM BONNET setlist:

01. “Eyes Of The World” (RAINBOW song)
02. “All Night Long” (RAINBOW song)
03. “God Blessed Video” (ALCATRAZZ song)
04. “Stand In Line” (IMPELLITTERI song)
05. “Will You Be Home Tonight” (ALCATRAZZ song)
06. “Jet To Jet” (ALCATRAZZ song)
07. “Island In The Sun” (ALCATRAZZ song)
08. “Suffer Me” (ALCATRAZZ song)
09. “Night Games” (ALCATRAZZ song)
10. “Desert Song” (MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP song)
11. “Dancer” (MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP song)
12. “Since You Been Gone” (Russ Ballard cover)
13. “Assault Attack” (MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP song)
14. “Lost In Hollywood” (RAINBOW song)

Last out of the first festival day was BLIND GUARDIAN. It was long since I had last seen them and what sticks in my memory is the absolutely fantastic performance at 'Wacken Open Air' where the whole crowd sang “Valhalla” and one rather dull show some years later. I don't remember if I've seen them after that so it was with mixed emotions I went to this show. BLIND GUARDIAN was and can absolutely be one of the best live-acts around and, I wouldn't say worst because they've always sounded good, but rather boring. Hansi Kürsch seems a little shy on occasion when just handling the vocal duties and his mellow attitude wasn't pushed when the rest of the band was placed on podiums alongside the drums. Ok, they didn't stay there the whole show though. Guitarists André Olbrich and Marcus Siepen moved around in a good way and a few songs into the set it all fell into place. The crowd was very enthusiastic and that support really lighted up the mood on stage. It struck me how damn fantastic many of these songs are, “The Script For My Requiem” and “Nightfall” boosted me as well as the crowd. The sing-a-long didn't reach 'Wacken' levels of course but it was good and it's good to have in mind that the festival doesn't have full capacity the first day with only the smallest stages operating. So, the support BLIND GUARDIAN got was fantastic and they deserved it all. They sounded good and it was fun to watch them play too. It was back to the good old days again. Songs like “Bright Eyes” and “Time What Is Time” really have stood the test of time and are as good today as when they were released some decades ago.

The downside with 'Sweden Rock Festival' is that the nights get awfully cold, especially when the weather have been as nice, sunny and warm as it was this first day. During the nights, the temperature crawls down and even if this was a good year with regards to this it was really chilly towards the end of the BLIND GUARDIAN set. It's for good and bad actually that bands are allowed very generous stage time at the festival, BLIND GUARDIAN were granted two full hours. Even if it was good, I gave up after “Valhalla” but looking at the setlist now, I regret that. There's no doubt BLIND GUARDIAN have songs to fill an extensive set - they did it and their performance was great. It all sounded perfect. In the dark, they also made use of the lights in a very good way, so it was a very good ending of the first day.

BLIND GUARDIAN setlist:

01. “The Ninth Wave”
02. “The Script For My Requiem”
03. “Nightfall”
04. “Fly”
05. “Tanelorn (Into The Void)”
06. “Prophecies”
07. “The Last Candle”
08. “Lord Of The Rings”
09. “Bright Eyes”
10. “Time What Is Time”
11. “The Curse Of Feanor”
12. “Imaginations From The Other Side”
13. “Sacred Worlds”
14. “Twilight Of The Gods”
15. “Valhalla”
16. “Into The Storm”
17. “The Bard's Song - In The Forest”
18. “Mirror Mirror”
