Killer Be Killed - Killer Be Killed

Killer Be Killed - Killer Be Killed

(CD, Nuclear Blast USA, 2014)

Seeing Max Cavalera in the KILLER BE KILLED lineup can be easily considered as a warranty of high quality music, taking also into account that this charismatic frontman has not been involved in something mediocre (not even close). At the same time, his characteristic timbre and way of song-writing can doom an entire project because it’s impossible to stand outside the SOULFLY and SEPULTURA shadow and claim music diversity or originality. Fortunately, the latter does not apply to the supergroup named KILLER BE KILLED and one of the main reasons is that the lead singing time is shared between Max, THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN’s Greg Puciato and MASTODON’s Troy Sanders. In any case, it’s intriguing to say the least to listen how these gentlemen’s musical background worked in the same studio and create the self-titled KILLER BE KILLED debut.

Of course, the rhythm guitars of “Wings Of Feather And Wax” have a SOULFLY vibe, but at the same time the music sounds modern and more melodic due to the awesome blend of the three voices. There are many flavors in this track from some STRAPPING YOUNG LAD insanity (during the faster part) to an almost SLIPKNOT groove and aggression. Don’t be scared by the latter reference because there are no samplers or effects; just in-your-face drumming and Thrash guitar action enhanced by Max’s four-string and down-tuned groove. Yeah, crank up the volume during “Face Down” and headbang like there’s no tomorrow with “Curb Crusher” following the simple yet-most-effective main riff. “Save The Robots” proves that these guys were inspired and did not play it safe by using the blueprints from their full-time bands. This one has a character of its own, starting off with a killer bass doodle before bringing along the modern US-raised heaviness in the vein of DEVILDRIVER letting the wah pedal effect and the absolutely bass driven melody to put the icing on the cake.

In “I.E.D.” KILLER BE KILLED brought together the different styles and allow me to highlight the SOULFLY Punk/Thrash rhythm guitar madness, MASTODON’s bass Sludge progression and, last but not least, THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN’s Metalcore aggression that tops off this explosive combination. “Forbidden Fire” is the last song of the tracklist and probably the most diverse one starting off with a SABBATH-esque bass driven “Planet Caravan”-type of spaced out music (love the high-hat finishing touch) before letting Max deal with the heavier and still mid-tempo rhythm. The way this song switches from melody to heaviness is a solid proof that this lineup has more to offer (and maybe evolve), so I am already hoping to see more from KILLER BE KILLED in the not-so-distant future.

Sure, the lineup of a supergroup can be a strong tempter but there have been many cases where the music did not live up to the high-expectations. KILLER BE KILLED can be tagged as an exception since the music has more to offer than just a clever blend of the musicians’ personal styles. Based on what I listened here, I keep my fingers crossed that this collaboration will keep going and maybe put together some KILLER BE KILLED live dates...
